Report card comments for Ontario schools
Ontario Report Comments helps Ontario teachers draft report card comments aligned to Growing Success and the achievement chart. Free tips and link badges.
What Ontario Report Comments does
Ontario Report Comments is a report-writing workspace for Ontario teachers. It turns a teacher's notes into a draft comment for report cards, covering Kindergarten to Grade 12.
Ontario report cards follow Growing Success, with Levels 1-4 on the achievement chart and Level 3 as the provincial standard. Comments cover both subject achievement and the learning skills and work habits.
For teachers
Enter a student code, the achievement level and a few notes. Ontario Report Comments drafts a comment in Ontario curriculum language that you edit and approve before pasting it into Trillium or Edsby.
For principals and leaders
Comments across a year group share a consistent structure and tone, while every word still goes through the class teacher. Each teacher uses their own account, so there is nothing to install or integrate.
Why schools use it
What changes for staff writing report cards.
Written in your curriculum's language
Drafts follow Ontario Ministry of Education expectations and the the Ontario achievement chart (Levels 1-4, with Level 3 as the provincial standard), reported as letter grades in Grades 1-6 and percentage marks in Grades 7-12.
Teacher judgement stays in charge
Teachers set the level and the focus, and review, edit or regenerate every comment.
Inclusive by default
Includes English language learner support and support for students on an IEP, without putting diagnoses in the comment.
More than report cards
The same workspace drafts parent emails, lesson ideas and differentiated tasks.
Privacy and student data
Ontario Report Comments does not store personal student information. Teachers use codes or nicknames instead of names, and only de-identified workspace data is kept. Workspace data is encrypted at rest and never sold. To draft a comment, only de-identified inputs are sent to our AI provider, OpenAI. Read the privacy policy for the details.

6 tips for writing better report cards
Free to share with your staff, no sign-up needed.
1. Pair a strength with a next step
Ontario comments are expected to name strengths and next steps. Write one of each per subject, tied to a specific overall expectation.
2. Lead with something specific
Open with one thing the student did well this period, described precisely enough that a parent knows it was written about their child.
3. One next step, not five
End with a single, achievable next step. A report card with one clear goal is more useful at home than a list of weaknesses.
4. Describe the work, not the person
Write "checks calculations before handing work in" rather than "is careless". Behaviour can change, but labels stick.
5. Keep diagnoses out of the comment
Describe the adjustments that help and the progress made. Support classifications and diagnoses belong in the IEP, not in the report card.
6. Read it aloud before you submit
If a sentence sounds like a template when spoken, the family will read it that way too. Swap one generic phrase for a real example.

No. The teacher chooses the achievement level, adds their own observations and approves every comment. Your principal can treat it the same way as a comment bank: a drafting aid, with the professional judgement left to the teacher.
Teachers copy approved comments and paste them into Trillium or Edsby or whichever reporting system the school uses. No student records are pulled from or sent to that system.
Yes. Each teacher creates their own account and buys a token pack, so staff can start without a school-wide contract. Tokens do not expire, so they carry over to the next reporting period.
